International Students

The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square

The Department of English welcomes applications for full-time study from people of all nationalities and backgrounds.

The department provides international students with access to leading researchers in the field and to high quality teaching. Based in Mile End, the campus provides a lively, engaging and integrated community of students and staff from a variety of backgrounds. International applicants are warmly welcomed and often housed on campus. If you are planning to come from overseas to read English here, we will do all that we can to ensure that you settle quickly and comfortably into the Department’s lively and cosmopolitan environment.

I chose Queen Mary because it was the only one that made an effort to reach out to me during the application process. The other schools made me feel like 'just another applicant' and QM made me feel like they actually wanted me to enrol. The Finance department has also made my life a lot easier – especially with the loans process. I have been really impressed with the quality of my lecturers and their passion for their subjects. I don't feel like anyone is just going through the motions when they're instructing. And of course, being in London is unbeatable. The opportunities are endless. I like the fact that I can study Hamlet in class and then have several options if I want to see it on stage. Or I can read a poem about Waterloo Bridge and then go walk on it." Emily, International Student (2011-14)

Study Abroad programme

In addition to the full 3-year programme of BA studies, undergraduate applicants also have the option to join Queen Mary through the Study Abroad programme. The Study Abroad programme permits students to take courses in the Department for either semester 1 or semester 2, or for one full year as part of their pre-existing studies at an international home institution.

Further details can be found on the Study Abroad page of the main Queen Mary site.

English modules at Queen Mary are enormously popular with students on the Study Abroad programme, and every year the department is home to a large and varied community of international students. International students make an important contribution to the life of the department and are highly regarded. As well as studying with specialist researchers, students benefit from the variety of modules (literary, philosophical, visual, and historical) offered across periods, and the particular experience of studying writers like Shakespeare, Blake, Dickens, and Woolf in London. The main Queen Mary website provides a module directory with a comprehensive list of options.

The University website also includes a dedicated section for international students, including links to region-specific pages, details about fees and scholarships, and advice about immigration and visas. Alternatively, you can email Queen Mary’s International Office for further information: international-office@qmul.ac.uk.
