This information is for new undergraduate students who are beginning a degree programme in September 2016 within the School of English and Drama.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you in September. This page provides some useful information about beginning your studies with us.

Welcome Week

Come to see us at the English and Drama Reception on Monday 19 September 2016 to collect your New Student information pack. It contains all you need to know about events we’ll be running in the School (and how to pick up the free reading packs available for some modules). Visit us at any time between 10:00am and 4pm on Monday 19 September. We’re on the third floor of the ArtsOne building.

If you're starting a joint degree, check the website of your other School for information about their Welcome Week events:

Module Choices

Students on some joint degrees with English can choose an optional module in your first year. To select complete this form by Monday 5 September.


If you’re starting any of the following degrees, all your first year modules are compulsory, so you don’t need to complete the form:

  • Q300 English
  • QW34 English and Drama

Some modules will also have free module packs that you can collect when you start.

Term Dates and provisional timetable

Welcome Week runs from Monday 19 September to Friday 23 September 2016.
Teaching begins on the week commencing Monday 26 September 2016.

Semester 1
19 September - 16 December 2016


Semester 2
• 9 January - 31 March 2017


Semester 3 - revision week
• 24 April - 28 April 2017


Semester 3 - examination period
• 2 May - 9 June 2017
• Bank holidays: 1 and 29 May 2017

 

What and when is Reading Week?

There’s a Reading Week in Semester 1 and Semester 2. It’s always in Week 7 and is a chance for you to catch up on your reading and assignments. In 2016-2017, Reading Weeks are as follows:


Semester 1: 7 November – 11 November 2016
Semester 2: 20 February – 24 February 2017

Teaching timetable:

We’ll give you an individual timetable in your New Student Information Pack. You can see a provisional timetable here, but this is subject to change.


And remember, if you’re starting a joint degree with another subject, make sure you visit the website of your other Department or School: School of History, School of Languages, Linguistics and Film
