The English Department has a long history of excellence in research in English studies.
Our expertise ranges from medieval to contemporary literature, including British, American, and Irish literature, postcolonial studies and world literature in English, Renaissance and early modern literature, eighteenth-century studies, Romanticism, nineteenth-century studies, modernism and twentieth-century literature, history of the book, contemporary writing, contemporary poetry, critical theory, and cultural history.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), Queen Mary was ranked in the top five English departments in the UK for the quality of our research (THES quality rankings).
