Queen Mary has a very diverse body of students and we welcome applicants from a broad range of backgrounds.

To apply for a place you need to complete Queen Mary's online application form. Further information on that process is available through the College Admissions website.

For informal academic enquiries about the MA, contact Shane Boyle (m.s.boyle@qmul.ac.uk). For general advice about taught postgraduate study, email: sed-admissions@qmul.ac.uk or telephone us on +44 (0)20 7882 8571.

Personal Statement

Your Personal Statement is an important part of your application. It should clarify any relevant experience and interests that are not self-evident in your application. It is also an opportunity for you to demonstrate why you are well suited to the programme, as well as to Drama’s established research interests (you may want to consult staff profiles for help with this). Effective Personal Statements may demonstrate a commitment to the cultural politics of performance, expertise in a specific genre or form of theatre and performance, and provide evidence of your familiarity with the Department and its research strengths.

You also need to propose a provisional topic for your MA dissertation. While we expect your interests to develop and change during your study, a provisional proposal demonstrates your ability to think about your research interests systematically and to convey those interests to others in an accessible manner. The MA convener is happy to discuss your research interests informally with you before you submit your application.

There are no formal parameters for the personal statement, which will necessarily be dependent on your own specific situation and expertise, but many candidates choose to write between 750 and 1000 words (approximately 1-2 single spaced, typed pages).

Entry Requirements

We normally expect applicants to hold (or be predicted) at least a good 2.1 degree (or equivalent) in Drama, Theatre, or Performance Studies, or in another subject relevant to the programme.

We also encourage applications from qualified candidates who can demonstrate relevant professional experience, for example in performance practice or in the cultural industries. You should demonstrate clearly in your personal statement how this experience contributes to your aptitude for academic study at postgraduate level, including written and practice-based research.

References

We ask you to provide two academic references, and there is a space on your application form to upload these. If your referees are willing to send you their references, you can upload them directly with your application. If your referees would rather not send you their references, they can send them directly to sed-admissions@qmul.ac.uk

If your referees do decide to send their references themselves, you will still be expected to upload a file in the references section of your application. This can be a simple Word document stating ‘References will be sent separately’.
