About the Programme

You will benefit from staff expertise in four main strands of research within theatre and performance studies: transnational performance, live art, cultural histories of performance, and applied performance. Our staff assist students working in early modern through to contemporary theatre and performance, offering a wealth of opportunities for students to specialise in many research areas and periods.

A key benefit of the programme is its flexibility, balancing rigorous theoretical and historical exploration with structured experimentation in performance practice. Across compulsory and optional modules, you can develop both theoretical and practical projects to advance your own research agendas.

In addition to working with academic staff in the Department of Drama, you can attend lectures, workshops, and mentoring sessions with visiting artists throughout your studies.  In recent years the MA has hosted a wide range of high-profile artists, including Ron Athey, Stacy Makishi, Kira O‚ÄôReilly, Peggy Shaw, Manuel Vason, Simon Vincenzi, Del LaGrace Volcano, and many others. You also have the opportunity to exploit the many resources, networks, and facilities available to graduate students in London.
